Mechanische Musik-Museum Varkaus
Eine Reise in die Vergangenheit verspricht das Mechanische Musik-Museum in Varkaus seinen Besuchern. Hier können die Gäste legendäre Instrumente wie ein Welte-Klavier oder das Popper-Orchestrion "Goliath" hören - ein Live-Erlebnis der ganz besonderen Art.
Auch dieser hübsche Schrank macht Musik
Die Kleinstadt Varkaus im Osten Finnlands findet in den üblichen Reiseführern nur wenig Beachtung. Wer auf der Fernverkehrsstraße 5 von Mikkeli nach Kuopio reist, fährt an Varkaus vorbei. Auch wir haben das Städtchen einige Male links liegen lassen, als wir das rätselhafte Hinweisschild “Mekaanisen Musiikin Museo” gesehen haben. Doch schließlich siegte die Neugier, wir nahmen die Abfahrt und landeten kurz darauf vor einer Art Herrenhaus am Stadtrand. Hier betreibt die Familie des deutschen Auswanderers Jürgen Kempf seit 1981 ein Museum für mechanische Musik.
Musik von der Rolle
Diese Geige spielt ohne Geiger
Rund 400 Musikautomaten haben die Kempfs in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zusammengetragen. Einen Teil davon bekommen die Besucher im Museum zu sehen - und natürlich auch zu hören. Im Mechanische Musik-Museum werden technisch anspruchsvolle Apparate gezeigt, die selbst Musikinstrumente spielen - zum Beispiel das Welte-Klavier: Damit ist es der deutschen Firma Welte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts gelungen, weitgehend originalgetreue Aufnahmen von Klavierstücken auf Lochstreifen zu konservieren - und das sogar mit Anschlagsdynamik. Das Verfahren war so gut, dass selbst namhafte Komponisten Stücke für das Automatenklavier schrieben oder - wie Gustav Mahler und Claude Debussy - ihre Werke auf den Notenrollen festhielten. Ein Welte-Steinway-Flügel lässt sich in Varkaus ebenso bewundern wie ein Pianola-Klavier; und sogar eine Automaten-Geige hat das Museum zu bieten.
Überwältigende Klangfülle

Eine wahre Augenweide im Mekaanisen Musiikin Museo sind die Orchestrions, die mit Drehorgel, Streicher, Bläser, Flöten und Schlagzeug Märsche und Salonmusik wiedergeben. Familie Kempf hat die teilweise über 100 Jahre alten schrankwandgroßen Ungetüme mit viel Liebe restauriert. In der Sammlung befindet sich auch der Goliath, das größte Orchestrion der Welt. Hugo Popper hat den deckenhohen Musikautomaten einst in seiner Leipziger Fabrik bauen lassen. In dem stilvoll eingerichteten Museum vermittelt er einen guten Eindruck vom gesellschaftlichen Leben der Goldenen 20er; die Klangfülle des Goliath ist überwältigend (man muss das wirklich gehört haben).
Gut eine Stunde dauert die unterhaltsame Führung durch das Mechanische Musik-Museum in Varkaus. Danach waren wir um viele Klangeindrücke reicher - und auch um so manche Anekdote, mit denen Jürgen Kempf seine Führung ausschmückt.
