Die alte Kirche von Petäjävesi
Sie ist Unesco-Weltkulturerbe und gilt als Finnlands bedeutendstes Denkmal der Holzarchitektur: Die alte Kirche von Petäjävesi lockt Jahr für Jahr zahlreiche Besucher an - die dann jedoch oftmals vor verschlossenen Türen stehen.
Jederzeit zu besichtigen: die Kirche von außen
Petäjävesi ist eine kleine Gemeinde mit rund 4.000 Einwohnern in Mittelfinnland, eine gute halbe Autostunde von Jyväskylä entfernt. Wer von hier aus auf der Fernverkehrsstraße 23 Richtung Westen fährt, der kommt an der alten Kirche von Petäjävesi vorbei, einem Gotteshaus mit bewegter Geschichte.
Fassade ohne Holzverkleidung
Schon in den 1720er Jahren gab es in der kleinen Ortschaft Bestrebungen, eine eigene Kirche zu errichten. Aber erst 1763 begann der Baumeister Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen mit seinem Werk. Zwei Jahre dauerten die Arbeiten, dann war die Kirche fertig - ein Sakralgebäude in der damals üblichen Blockhaustechnik, allerdings mit einer augenfälligen Besonderheit: Anders als viele ähnliche Bauten ist die Fassade der Holzkirche in Petäjävesi nicht vollständig mit Holz verkleidet.
Deckengewölbe im Gottesdienstraum
Von außen wirkt die alte Kirche eher schlicht, von innen allerdings überraschend prachtvoll: Über dem Kirchenraum spannt sich ein hohes Tonnengewölbe mit einer achteckigen Kuppeldecke; die Kanzel ist mit volkstümlichen Schnitzereien verziert; im Altarraum hängen Portraits von Moses und Luther, die der Handwerksmaler Carl Fredrik Blom angefertigt hat. Sehenswert ist auch der Glockenturm. Erkki Jaakonpoika Leppänen, der Enkel des Kirchenbaumeisters, hat ihn 1821 errichtet - fast 60 Jahre nach der Kirche. Durch diesen Turmanbau betritt der Besucher den Gottesdienstraum und darf dann einen Blick auf die blau bemalte Öffnung zum Glockenzug werfen, die das Firmament darstellen soll.
Beispielhafte Blockhauskonstruktion
Nur vier Jahrzehnte nach der Fertigstellung des Glockenturms wurde in Petäjävesi mit dem Bau einer neuen Holzkirche begonnen. Nach deren Fertigstellung im Jahr 1867 wurde die alte Kirche noch zwölf Jahre lang genutzt, danach gab die Gemeinde ihre alte Kirche auf und sie verfiel zusehends - bis sie in den 1920er Jahren unter Denkmalschutz gestellt und anschließend restauriert wurde. Heute wird die Kirche vor allem in den Sommermonaten wieder vielseitig genutzt - für Hochzeiten und Taufen, Gottesdienst und Konzerte.

Die Unesco hat die alte Kirche von Petäjävesi 1994 in die Liste des Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. “Die alte Kirche von Petäjävesi zeigt repräsentativ die architektonische Tradition des Holzkirchenbaus im nördlichen Europa”, schreibt die Unesco zur Begründung. “Die alte Kirche ist ein einzigartiges Beispiel für die traditionellen Blockhaustechniken der bäuerlichen Bevölkerung in den nördlichen Nadelwaldgebieten. Architektonische Trends aus Europa, die den Grundriss und die Form beeinflusst haben, wurden auf meisterliche Art und Wiese in diese traditionelle Blockhauskonstruktion eingearbeitet.”
Leider lässt sich die Schönheit dieser alten Kirche nur in wenigen Wochen des Jahres bestaunen: Wie viele andere Touristenattraktionen in Finnland ist auch die alte Kirche von Petäjävesi nur in den Sommermonaten Juni, Juli und August geöffnet. Der Parkplatz für Besucher liegt direkt an der Fernverkehrsstraße 23; von hier aus sind es rund 200 Meter bis zur Kirche. Für den Eintritt verlangt die Kirchengemeinde derzeit 6 Euro (Stand 2016).
